A high-floating attractor dry fly built for big, fast water. The segmented foam-style body in burnt orange, yellow underwing, and splayed elk hair wing give it an oversized, buoyant profile that pushes water and gets noticed. The forked tail and heavy hackle keep it riding high even in heavy rapids and runs.
When to Use:
Best Time of Year: Late June through September, peaking during the summer stonefly and grasshopper seasons.
Imitates: Large stoneflies (golden stones, salmonflies), grasshoppers, and large caddis. Also functions as an excellent attractor pattern when nothing specific is hatching.
Target Fish: Primarily rainbow and brown trout, but equally effective for cutthroat in BC interior rivers. Works well on aggressive bull trout in larger river systems. In Ontario and the prairies, smallmouth bass will readily take this pattern on warm summer evenings.
Pro Tip: Dead drift it through fast runs and riffles, or skitter it across the surface to trigger reaction strikes. Excellent as a dry-dropper indicator fly with a nymph hanging 18-24 inches below.
